I started tutoring A-Level Accounting while studying accounting myself and have continued for the past five years. I remember how easy it is to mix up adjustments, especially accruals, depreciation and irrecoverable debts, so I’m careful not to rush those topics. Lessons usually involve a short explanation followed by questions of increasing difficulty. Near exams, we switch almost completely to timed past-paper practice.

Accounting made much more sense to me when I stopped treating it as a collection of rules, and that’s roughly how I teach it now. I’ve tutored A-Level Accounting for three years, with a particular interest in costing and marginal costing questions. I often use small business examples before moving onto the exam version of a topic. Students also send me attempted questions between lessons so we have something useful to start with next time.

I’ve taught A-Level Accounting for just over six years, and one thing I’ve noticed is that students often know the theory but get stuck when a question looks unfamiliar. I like taking those questions apart slowly and showing what information actually matters. Financial statements and partnership accounts are probably my favourite areas to teach. Before exams, we spend plenty of time working under proper time limits.
